Horse Riding

The Yorkshire Dales provide some of the most varied and distinctive riding in the country. High moorland and rolling farmland can all be experienced in one day.

Bring your own horse and arrange to stay at a horse friendly Bed & Breakfast - contact www.ride-uk.org for a list of horse-friendly Bed & Breakfasts - or go for a trek from one of the trekking centres in the Dales. Choose from one hour, one day or a week's riding. Details of Trekking Centres are provided with the 'Trekking Centres in the Dales' section of 'Related Links'.

The views over the dry-stone walls from the back of a horse are breathtaking and so is the weather! Be prepared to experience the full range of British weather, sometimes in the space of one hour.

Pennine Bridleway Logo

The Pennine Bridleway will be a new 350 mile (560km) long National Trail in the north of England.  Funded by the Countryside Agency (website opens in new window) and with the support of a £1.8 million Sport England award, the Bridleway will enter the Yorkshire Dales National Park at Long Preston and weave through the Dales via Settle, Malham Moor, Feizor, Austwick, Selside, and Newby Head, leaving the National Park at the Cumbria County Council boundary above Garsdale - a total length of 52 miles (84 km).

Once fully open this trail should take 3-4 weeks to ride in full, though the section through the Dales will probably take a week to 10 days to ride.

The Settle Loop, which was the first section of the Pennine Bridleway to open in the Yorkshire Dales, provides a great one day circular ride.  More information can be found on the Pennine Bridleway section of the Authority website (link opens in new window).  For more information about the whole trail visit the dedicated Pennine Bridleway website (link opens in new window).
