Bedale

This small market town (market day on Tuesday) forms a natural gateway into Wensleydale.

A rather special feature is the village pump on Wycar Green with its stone shelter. There is a small village museum, and a good range of local shops, inns and cafés. The recently re-opened station on the Wensleydale Railway offers a regular service of trains to Leyburn and Redmire.

Thorp Perrow Arboretum (website opens in new window), three miles from Bedale, is one of Britain’s finest private collections of trees. Its 85 acres are home to a whole range of rare trees and shrubs, gardens, a falconry and a visitor centre and café and it can be accessed from Mondays to Fridays from Bedale or Masham on Bus 144 to Snape (close to Arboretum entrance).
